There are three main hotels on Statia, The Old Gin House, Kingswell and The Golden Era.  I recommend The Old Gin House for most of my clients.  The Golden Era Hotel is in the "Cheap and Cheerful" category while Kingswell Inn is in the funky department.  Soon to be completed, a new bed and breakfast will appear, owned by the Swiss dive shop on the island.  Stay tuned for details but it sounds like it may be a lower cost alternative--not on the water but offering a nice seaview.  There are also a nice 2 bedroom private cottages available wiht a nice location as well as a Bed & Breakfast style room at Mama Jean's.

The Old Gin House's modern comfortable rooms are the backdrop to this historic landmark which dates back to the American Revolution.  Perhaps disappointingly, the reference to gin is to that of cotton gins, not the libations undertaken by the original British settlers. Original owners were held in quite high esteem for their gourmet delights.   In the 70's and early 80's, this hotel was recognized New Yorker and Gourmet magazine.  A death, loss of interest and a storm or two left The Old Gin House to the perils of weather and rot until new intrigue began.  By 1998, the property was restored, in line with the island's recognition of its unique tourist product.  Once again, the hotel proudly welcomes travelers and with the Faires's now operating the property, great service is finally back to this island icon.

The Old Gin House

Wonderfully restored

Handsome interiors to match

The perfect apres diving spot

The Golden Era is located on the water and has a bar and restaurant on the property.  It's convenient to all dive shops and has a view at the end of each hallway.  The rooms are decent, some even have a kitchenette, but "nothing to write home about".  The property is clean--but I like to make sure if you choose to stay here we assure a room without carpeting is confirmed.  I recommend this property for a single guy who's only interest is diving and convenience.

Kingswell Inn (now known as Kingswell Resort (but sorry, I can't call a small hotel a resort!) is one of those unique properties you won't forget.  The owners are completely down-to-earth characters who put on no airs.  The property, especially the dining room, is regularly occupied by their favorite critters...from a Great Dane to iguanas, birds and cats, animal lovers may find it intriguing others may find it a bit much.  The property has a nice new large pool and an assortment of different room styles to choose from.

For budget travelers not so interested in history and romance but just looking for a clean place, there is also the option of renting a cottage.   Mama Jean's works for a couple or single while Kerkweg Cottage is great for a couple or two couples.  Kerkweg Cottage has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, great views, air conditioning, etc.--link below.
