OK, you've been hearing about Saba for a long time and you're ready to book the
dive package. You want the best price, right? Well, sort of...you
want the best price and the best quality for this trip you've been waiting to
take. Before I tell you specifics about dive shops, I want to explain a
few things about diving Saba. Unlike say Cayman where there's a difference
of diving East End or 7-mile beach, Saba is only 5-square miles with most dive
sites within 15 minutes of the harbor. The one harbor is utilized by all
three dive shops. Dive prices are within $5/day--but, you should always
make sure the package quote includes transfers as this is a $20/day value.
All hotels are a 10-20 minute taxi ride to get to the diving. So, the
basics are the same. However, each of the 3 dive shops definitely have a
different style and cater to different markets.
Sea Saba
I
have to say my loyalty lies with Sea Saba because John taught me and
my husband to dive in 1993. Since then, John and Lynn have
continued to maintain the excellent reputation with new and return
customers. Even though they have the largest boats on the island, they
continue to stand by their word of no compromises and no crowds. Sea
Dragon and Giant Stride are 40' Delta dive boats but Sea Saba
only puts a maximum of 10 divers on these large diesel-powered boats. Check out their
comprehensive website for information from site descriptions to crew profiles.
Best nitrox prices at only $59/week unlimited. Their workshop is
located at the Fort Bay harbor facility but Sea Saba's office and
retail location are in the center of Windwardside--just below YIIK
restaurant--offering A-1 service from making dinner reservations to taking a
dive site request--oh, almost forgot, great clothing, too! New for
2003, Sea Saba has specialty "kids sizes" for your junior
divers. See their website for full details and advice on how this can
work for your family. For you non-kids types, don't worry, your diving
won't be compromised!
Saba
Deep
Mike
Myers has been running Saba Deep for over 15 years. Downsizing the
last few years, "Big Mike" is the sole employee. When busier
he will run one boat and Mike Myers another. Saba Deep has 3
gasoline-powered boats: Mystery and Magic @ 22' and MTwo
at 26'. One dive instructor per boat runs 3 dives per
day. Nitrox available upon request @ $15/tank.
In Two Deep (just above) serves great lunches and
has a boutique as well. Ft. Bay location only.
Saba
Divers
Saba Divers is
the newest dive shop on the island (Feb 2000). Wolfgang and Barbara Tooten
operate the German-run hotel, bar,
restaurant and dive shop. Their crew take divers on either Air
One their 14' Zodiac inflatable with outboards or Big Blue 32'
diesel-powered vessel. Saba Divers has a partial-pressure nitrox system
offering nitrox @ $15/tank. Their office and retail facility are in the same area as
the hotel, bar and restaurant. New in 2002, they have a Ft. Bay facility.
