El Momo Cottages

El Momo Cottages offers one of the best values in the Caribbean. The budget minded traveler can enjoy an eco- alternative with European-style cottages nestled in to the serene environment of Booby Hill. Nature lovers who prefer priceless amenities like a hammock overlooking a deep blue sea and genuine hospitality to air-conditioning or TV, will find El Momo to be the perfect retreat.  This photo of me with an iguana on the steps of El Momo is not something unusual or staged.  This is the type of encounter you can expect at this special property.  El Momo is not for everyone but those who can handle going up a few stairs and are looking for an alternative to a standard hotel room, you're in for a special treat.  Andries Bonema has been running El Momo for over a year.  Els and Gied Mommers (the origin of the name El Momo) were the originals builders of El Momo. Two dive instructors, Angelika and Oliver purchased the property in 1997. The Hartleib's transformed the property creating the fabulous ambience that can be simply described with 3 words "peace, silence, nature".  After putting their heart and soul in to the property for 8 years and having 2 young school children to rear, they decided it was best to sell and have the children educated in their home country of Germany.  The sold to Andreis who continues to run El Momo with some assistants. Be sure to take advantage of dining at El Momo any opportunity that you can.  From the home made breads at breakfast to the banana rum night cap, every part of the meal has a special personal touch, as does all aspects of this property.  Cottage in the Sky is like no where else!  A million dollar view, a fully eco love nest--does it get better? More cottage upgrades were put in place last summer so now you have more choices at El Momo  Turtle Cottage now also has a full kitchen and private bathroom.  Two other cottages have been upgraded with private bathrooms leaving just 3 cottages that share two facilities.  Still the best value on Saba and perhaps in the Caribbean--prices range from $52.50/night single to just $50/person for a super love nest, based on double occupancy. El Momo is a 10 minute walk up a residential road from the island's main village of Windwardside. The perfect place to "free your mind" awaits. A set of stairs leads you to six small wooden cottages which are surrounded by tropical flowers and palm trees with a view overlooking the hills and the Caribbean Sea. We are proud of our list of return clients but equally pleased with our resident iguanas, hummingbirds and treefrogs. Each cottage offers a private balcony with (of course!) a great view of the ocean.  The charming, shared bathroom building is located close to all cottages. In addition to our swimming pool El Momo also offers a cozy lounge area complete with a hammock near our honor bar. The famous El Momo breakfast includes homemade bread, fresh fruit, special coffee and a selection of teas. Ask about inclusive packages which include breakfast and other items.

Ecolodge

Worth the wait, this property took three years to be built by hand. Located on the Crispeen Trail, Saba's true eco property offers alternative lodging at affordable prices in a fully eco-setting  The 12 cottages were built by hand out of recycled and environmentally friendly construction materials.  Each cottage is painted differently by Heleen, a famous artist in the region and an owner of Ecolodge.  Operating on just wind and solar power, you can even feel good while sleeping here!  The on-site organic garden ensures truly garden fresh veggies with unmatched taste are served.  Accessible only by a hiking trail or The Mountain Road, I recommend this property to the more adventurous traveler who enjoys being one with nature and isn't paled by a hike or preplanning with a taxi.  On Wednesdays, Tom gives a fabulous 'virtual tour' slide show about Mt. Scenery and can sometimes be convinced to take you on a hike--what a special experience to be had with this famous environmentalist.  And speaking of acclaim, Heleen, the island's most known artist, also schedules afternoon paid workshops.

Juliana’s Hotel

It's just hard NOT to recommend Juliana's.  This charming hotel has the ideal location (on the rim of Windwardside yet very quiet), an excellent restaurant on site, wonderful service-minded staff and a choice of room style.  I knew Franklin and Juliana, the builders and owners of this property, for years.  Almost 8 yeas ago, the property was sold to Wim and Johanna Schutten.  This couple has brought new energy to Saba's most popular hotel.  The tradition of immaculate rooms and friendly service continues but Wim and Johanna continue to enhance the property as well.  The rooms, the apartment and the cottages have been warmed with more tropical colors and artwork.  Furniture, beds and mattresses have been replaced in both the rooms and cottages.  A computer terminal has been added to the recreation room with the addition of mini-bars and hammocks in all rooms.  Two jacuzzis were added--one for general use in the pool area and another at Flossie's Cottage which is exclusively for Flossie's occupants.  Tropics Cafe is open daily for breakfast and lunch--3 nights per week for dinners.  Juliana's offers options from simple garden view rooms with kitchenettes to ocean view rooms, a 3-room apartment and two cottages.  Orchid Cottage and Flossie's Cottage have always been two of the most popular places on Saba.  By choosing one of the cottages, you can enjoy the services of the hotel but also have the extra space of a house, the option of cooking in with a fully equipped kitchen, and more privacy.  See the link below as well as my Saba Cottages and Villas page for more photos and details of the amenities. Imagine enjoying all the comforts of home and a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountainside, sparkling blue ocean, and colorful tropical gardens, while being catered to with the utmost attentive service.  Juliana's offers you all those things and more.  Come visit us and have a vacation filled with fun, sun, and wonderful memories. WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE Nestled in the village of Windwardside, Juliana's offers their guests an ambiance of "Old World" with intimate and charming guestrooms but with modern conveniences from in room refrigerators, cable tv and two computer work stations in their recreation room. Just a few minutes walk away guests can stroll through Main Street with its boutiques, museum, restaurants, banks, grocery stores, and much, much more. Built in 1986 and with renovations ongoing throughout the years, Juliana's decided to keep true to the local architecture of gingerbread designs, while the décor is in a Caribbean setting. Owners Wim and Johanna bring new energy but the same service our return clients are accustomed to.

The Cottage Club

The Cottage Club is a cluster of six Saban style cottages perched on the edge of a ridge with an outstanding view of Mt. Scenery, the tiny village of the English Quarter, and the deep blue Caribbean Sea.  Each cottage has two units with a common walkway.  Under new management since October 2009, Sophie and Patrick bring new energy to this property.   They now offer daily breakfast and soon the hillside restaurant will offer more servies.  There are two units per bungalow-style cottage, each is equipped with a full-size kitchen, dining area, cable TV, wifi and wireless capabilities and telephones.  Relax on your private balcony or by the natural, stone pool with it's striking view to Core Gut and Spring Bay.  Cool breezes are always plentiful. The Cottage Club is located in the village of Windwardside, down a quiet residential lane, within walking distance to a variety of restaurants and shops.

Hampshire is an international collection of properties which offers 45 unique individual quality hotels with a variety in superb facilities--Queen's Gardens on Saba is just one of the 45. Causal elegance best describes this hotel. The furnishings are far from standard with large hand crafted 4-poster beds, Indonesian antiques and sweeping ocean and village views. The units are set up more like condominiums, each with full kitchen and living areas. Choose from varying levels of large suites suitable for a couple or a couple of friends. Jacuzzis with fabulous views are part of the pricing in superior and royal suites. I recommend this property for those who like a quiet place, a bit away from it all. It's a bit more expensive for Saba but actually under priced when compared to similar properties on other Caribbean islands. Under the direction of Hidde and Claire for more than 2 years now, this property now has all the components of a top notch boutique resort--from fine suites and elegant dining to excellent management ready to cater to what is important to you. The owner of Queen's Gardens Resort also owns Saba's finest villa: The Haiku House. Shearwater Resort I'm not sure where else you'll find a view quite as extraordinary. Shearwater offers spectacular views of the Caribbean and Atlantic Oceans and five neighboring islands from a dramatic cliffside location 2,000 feet above sea level. Views extend over 270 degrees to include Saba's highest point, the summit of Mount Scenery at 2,864 feet. Start your day watching the sun rise from your cliffside bungalow private balcony with an easterly view of four islands and finish it awaiting a green flash as the sun sets in the west with a view nearly to Diamond Rock. This hotel is perched atop Booby Hill, 10 minutes walk from the main village of Windwardside. With the largest pool and the island's only tennis court coupled with manager Paul Cizek's high standard of service, it is one of Saba's top hotels.
